PURPOSE

Black, Hispanic and Indigenous American representation in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) remains low compared to Caucasians and Asians of Indian and Far Eastern Asian descent.  These two groups have experienced growth in STEM over the past decade.  Southeast Asians which include Vietnamese, Hmong, Cambodian, Laotian, Filipino, Thai, Malay, Burmese and Brunei are often under-represented.  Asian groups must be assessed case by case since there are groups which continue to be under-represented.

  • Hispanic Americans make up only 8% of the STEM professionals including 5.8% as physicians.
  • Black Americans make up 5% of engineers and architects,  9% of all computer workers and 5% of physicians.
  • Current educational trends will not be able to increase the diversity in STEM professions.
  • Our goal is to increase the early awareness of STEM career pathways in Cleveland
